This is a fantastic Christmas Nativity set of hand-carved Helen Bullard dolls that are just wonderful! Helen Bullard was a NIADA doll artist. She often marketed her dolls as "Holly Dolls" from the Ozarks. This nativity set was carved in 1971 and many of the dolls in the set and/or their clothing are signed by Helen Bullard. There is a Mary holding the Baby Jesus, Joseph, the three Wise Men, and a Shepherd, all hand carved and clothed by Bullard. Joseph has a paper attached that says, "Nativity Group by Helen Bullard, Niada Artist Carved 1971 - 2 sets made." The set is in excellent condition! Mary has the most elaborate carving of her face and hair. Her clothing and veil envelop her with grace as she holds little Baby Jesus who is swaddled in a blanket. Mary's legs are beautifully carved. Joseph stands next to her and looks downwards in reverence. He has beautifully carved hands. The three wise men are carved and clothed beautifully. They all have carved legs with a dowel-like mechanism at the knee so they can kneel. The shepherd is clothed in an animal skin and has straight legs. The taller dolls measure 18-19" tall. The shepherd measures 9 inches tall. All the dolls are in fantastic condition. The shorter Wise Man has a slightly loose head. A couple of tiny holes in a couple of the outfits and Mary has some faint water spotting on the front of her dress, but overall great condition! A gorgeous and unique Nativity to display for Christmas!
